The PS4 is one of the best games consoles you can buy today, and it’s not just because of the games or the graphics – it’s also because of PS Plus, Sony’s online multiplayer service. With PS Plus you can go to head to head with gamers across the world – as well as your own friends – but PSN Plus is best enjoyed with an awesome gaming headset. Whether you want to bark orders to your friends during a game of Star Wars: Battlefront, or trash talk during The Division, headsets make online gaming way more fun. But which headset should you buy for your PlayStation 4? Here’s our pick of the best headsets for the PS4 in 2017.

Best gaming headphones for the PlayStation 4

1. Sony PlayStation Wireless Stereo 7.1 Gaming Headset (£70)

If you don’t want a to spend a huge amount of money, it’s probably worth looking at Sony’s own headset offering first. For only £70, Sony’s own-brand gaming headset is surprisingly good, and comes with virtual 7.1 – so you should get a nice impression of 3D sound. What’s more, the PlayStation headset is also wireless and compatible with the PS Vita, so you can take it with you for mobile, surround-sound gaming.

2. Astro A50 gaming headset (£250)

Although the Astro A50 isn’t the newest headset on the block – or the most stylish – it’s still considered one of the best ways to experience gaming on your PS4. It might look big and clunky, but when it comes to gaming accessories that’s probably a good thing – and what it lacks up for in style it more than makes up for in comfort and sheer sonic performance. But with great power comes a great price: The Astro A50 will set you back between £180 and £220.

3. Turtle Beach Elite 800 (£230)

Turtle Beach is one of the best-known brands when it comes to gaming accessories, and the Elite 800 represents its best headset for the PS4. Now, it does cost a hefty £230, but that gets you a range of features that make gaming even better – as well as a few others you didn’t even know you needed. For a start, it’s compatible with the PS3 and the PS4, and it also comes with noise-cancelling tech – so you won’t be distracted by the real world. Throw in DTS 7.1 channel surround sound along with 10 hours of battery life, and the Elite 800s are worth a look.

4. Kingston HyperX Cloud II (£75)

Sure, the ultimate headsets for the PS4 do cost a decent amount of money, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a serious sonic upgrade on a sensible budget. Take the Kingston HyperX Cloud II for example. It might look plain, but it delivers great sound, impressive comfort and only costs £75 – so it won’t eat into your budget for actual games. Here’s what our friends at Expert Reviews had to say about the Kingston HyperX Cloud II.

5. Logitech G933 Artemis Spectrum (£170)

If you’ve been gaming for a while, you’ll know Logitech makes some of the best accessories around, from steering wheels to controllers and speakers. The Logitech G933 Artemis Spectrum is one of the company’s most fully-featured models, and thankfully has the technology to back up its spaceship-like name. As you’d expect, you get 7.1 surround sound, and then a load other stuff too. The Logitech can work with both the PS4, Xbox One and PC – but it also comes with a USB-powered mixer and noise cancelling mic. But my favourite feature? The Logitech also features customisable RGB lighting, so you can customise your headset with a choice of 16.8 million colours on offer.
