How to Turn Off Moving Faces in Group FaceTime on Mac

In macOS Catalina 10.15.5, Apple introduced a new Group FaceTime feature that disables the option that automatically enlarges the tile of the person who is speaking.

By default, ‌FaceTime‌ has a dynamic view with a tile for each person. The person who is speaking at the current time has a larger tile, while tiles for people who are not talking fade into the background. Apple refers to this as Automatic Prominence.

However, with people recently using group ‌FaceTime‌ chats more than ever before, Apple appears to have realized that this behavior is not a great experience, especially when a large number of people are on a call.

In macOS 10.15.5 and later, the feature can be turned off by following these simple steps.

  1. Launch the FaceTime app on your Mac, from the Applications folder or the Dock.

  2. Select FaceTime -> Preferences in the menu bar.

  3. In the Settings tab, under Automatic Prominence, uncheck the box next to Speaking.FaceTime

A grid with static image sizes for all call participants is likely to prove better for meetings and events where several people are talking at once or right after one another. It also mimics the layout options available in Zoom and other video chatting apps.

Apple said the camera offers 1080p video recording, but didn't mention photo quality. Gizmodo said it's a 4-megapixel camera and described the photos as...

Why Can't iPhone Duo Users Make Eye Contact on FaceTime?

Monday October 26, 2026 3:49 pm PDT by Tim Hardwick
FaceTime's Eye Contact setting is missing on the iPhone Duo, MacRumors can confirm. The setting was first flagged as absent by MacRumors forum member TwoBytes, who noticed their eyes looking "a little off" during a call. Introduced in iOS 14, Eye Contact uses machine learning to subtly adjust your eyes during a video call to make it seem like you're looking into the camera lens, even though ...

iOS 27.2 Expands Dual Capture to Group FaceTime

Monday October 26, 2026 12:46 pm PDT by Juli Clover
The iOS 27.2 update Apple released today allows the FaceTime Dual Capture feature to be used in Group FaceTime calls. Dual Capture is a feature that lets you stream FaceTime video content from the front and rear cameras at the same time. On a compatible device running iOS 27, flipping the camera while on a FaceTime call automatically turns on Dual Capture. Dual Capture is available on...
